QUINTA DA DEVESA |
NEW in Vintages - I which that this was released in a more appropriate month when fortified wines are on a drinker’s mind and not May. Here is the first Vintage Port from UINTA DA DEVESA and it is a winner. Extremely deep intense purple colour, it was initially sweet, bright and cassis driven with some icing sugar notes. By letting it breath for several hours in the glass, it came to life. The nose was intense, complex, spicy and very ripe with plummy, baked cherries and some some leafy savoury notes pus a hint of burnt caramel. Sweet, medium-full bodied, intense, well structured, slightly baked, very ripe, rich, dark plum fruit with a touch of dates, chocolate and cedar on the lingering, dense, cassis-tinged finish. Note that the quoted LCBO tasting note was dated July 9, 2020 only 6 weeks after it was bottled on May 21. Also, the actual blend is 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca,10% Tinta Roriz and 20% Vinhas Velhas (various old indigenous vines). |

TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Vintage Port is a 50/30 blend of Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, with the rest Sousão, all aged in old balseiros (large upright barrels) for one year. It was bottled May 21, 2020, with 115 grams of residual sugar. Sweet and light on opening, not showing much concentration, this does better with structure. It has some serious pop on the finish, eventually overwhelming the sweet fruit. There's a real backbone. The next day, it had fleshed out a bit too. That's just what it needed in order to shine. It had notably improved and was downright impressive, the mid-palate now coming closer to balancing the pure power. This has a lot to offer - and a lot more than I thought on my first tastes - but it needs some time to make its case better and demonstrate that all its parts are in balance. Drink date: 2028-2065. Score - 92+ (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, July 9, 2020) |
