Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer LA TORRE
This small estate of only 5.6 hectares only produces Brunello di Montalcino Riserva only in outstanding years. This is only the third appearance in Vintages. It has a medium deep garnet red colour with an amber-tinged edge. The nose is intense and gently complex with ripe, Damson plum along with some dried red cherry fruit along with sandalwood-nuanced dried roses. Dry medium-full bodied, intense, sandalwood-rose-tinged, ripe plum and bright red cherry flavours balanced by some youthful, faintly bricky, lavender notes and a lingering, fairly high acid finish. The dense mouthfeel is due to the lack of filtration and hence higher dry extract, which is a very good thing for longevity. It has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L04/21 on the front label. The wine was aged for 48 months in large 39-hectolitres barrels of Slavonian oak with 17% spending 18 months in smaller French barrique. CSPC 17626

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is silky, smooth and very expressive. The whole theme of the 2017 vintage sees a tug-of-war between power and elegance. In many cases, power wins in 2017 and elegance is sidelined. Not here. Made with organic fruit, this is a delicate and graceful expression of Sangiovese with bright red fruit, cassis, lilac, earth and lavender essence. With fruit from a cool 420 meters in elevation, this is one of the standout bottles of the vintage. Drink date: 2024-2040. Score - 95 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Feb. 17, 2022) Price $ 59.95
