TERROIR CACHÉ 2018 Unfiltered, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |

HIDDEN BENCH |
Very deep intense purple colour. Attractive, intense, gently spicy, ripe, plummy, cassis-black-cherry purée nose with some very faintly herbal, mineral-driven, cedary notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, intense, harmonious, ripe plum-cassis-cherry flavours with a lingering, bright, gently cedary, mineral-driven finish. Perfection with a rib steak. This 13 % alcohol totally new blend is now 46% Merlot, 23% Malbec and 31% Cabernet Franc (no Cabernet Sauvignon) are all organically grown and aged for 20 months in French oak (38% new, 23% 3rd and 39% neutral). It has only .7 g/L residual sugar and has not been fined and/or filtered meaning that it should age well and even improve over the next decade, especially with its 6.2 g/L total acidity (despite having full secondary fermentation in barrel). It has nice mouthfeel and harmony and can still improve. More accessible that the recommended 2017 (***/***+) that was released on November 13, 2021 at $44.95. |

TASTING NOTE: The blend is 46% Merlot, 31% Malbec and 23% Cabernet Franc all sourced from the three estate vineyards on the Beamsville Bench. It's aged in French oak (38% new) for 20 months. Such an enthralling nose of anise, cassis, blackberries and cherries with dried tobacco, earth, charred cedar, and rich spice notes. It's smooth but has structure on the palate with super dense wild red berries, tobacco, leather, blackberries, earth, and elegant spice notes all leading to a mouth-watering and lifted finish. Such a beautiful red wine with style and power that will continue to get better for 7+ years in the cellar. Score - 94 (Rick VanSickle, winesinniagara.com, July 4, 2022) |
