CHÂTEAU MAUCAMPS 2006 AC Haut-Médoc |

Maturing very deep intense garnet red with tight ambering edges. Intense, complex and earthy with maturing, somewhat rusty, faintly spicy, baked plum-cherry fruit with some licorice-tinged, sandalwood notes and a hint of iodine. Dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, fairly dense, intense, slightly spicy, attractive, warm, mature, plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, gently cedary, fairly high acid, walnut-tinged, very faintly herbal, minerally finish. This mature blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30%, Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot would be perfect with a slab of just-out-of-the-oven roast beef, gravy and Yorkshire pudding. Has 14% alcohol and no residual sugar evident with 6415 etched on the lower part of the glass bottle. This distinctive traditional style of Haut Medoc that will definitely have its fans. You may well want to try in in a variety of wine glasses to discover which one suits your palate. |

TASTING NOTE: Lovely, mature right bank Bordeaux here, straight from the textbook with its gravelly, graphite, black fruit, tobacco leaf, and cassis aromas/flavours, as complex and inviting as many more expensive cru classés. The palate has been polished down to shiny-silky texture with acids firmly in place - this 2006 vintage has turned out to be a delight for fans of the classic style, more elegant and refined than blockbuster vintages, and all the better for it. Stately and aristocratic, and an amazing value for mature, ready-to-drink, quality Bordeaux. Continue to hold another half dozen years if desired, though I find it's at or near peak. Tasted March 2021. Score - 94 (John Szabo, MS, winealign.com) |
