Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CASTELLO DELLA PANERETTA
A very fine, traditionally made, classically-styled, Chianti Reserva that is based on only two grapes: 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo which were aged in French oak barrels for 24 months. Deep intense purple-garnet colouri, This 2018 has a sublime nose - ripe plums, black cherries and figs with an intriguingly complex, gently earthy autumnal, roasted chestnut notes. Dry, medium bodied, well textured, intense, complex, slightly roasted, perfectly ripe, plumy, black-cherry fruit with some cedary, very faintly smoky, minerally, prosciutto-cassis notes on the lingering, bright finish. Riper than the recommended 2015 92-points that was released on August 22, 2020 at $30.95.

TASTING NOTE: As with the upcoming thorough and thoughtful 2019 Annata there is a next level depth of craft and understanding intuited by way of Riserva 2018. The fruit seems so well timed, picked late in the season, developed and yet braced in the moment, frozen in time. Feels cured and dried by cellar air, the vintage captured and preserved. This will live a long life, that much is sure and always drink up on the ridge, with the image of San Donato in Poggio demure in the distance. Drink date: 2024-2029. Tasted February 2022.
