LA ESPERANZA SINGLE VINEYARD BONARDA 2018 Mendoza |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
EL ENEMIGO |
Here is another new vintage release winner from Mendoza’s splendid El Enemigo winery. Very deep intense purple colour, the nose is bright and expressive with spicy, gently cedary. ripe, Damson plum and cassis-cherry fruit with a faint hint of licorice and mocha-chocolate. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, harmonious, gently spicy, bright, ripe, generous, plum-cherry-cassis flavours with a lingering, toasty finish. Great mouthfeel and quite ready to drink, this 100% Bonarda has 13.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with labeling number 3-22124 on the back label. It would be great if served in a large Pinot Noir glass with Thanksgiving roast duck. Don’t miss it! |

TASTING NOTE: La Esperanza is part of winemaker Alejandro Vigil's attempt to restore importance to the old bonarda vines that are planted in eastern Mendoza. Under the shadow of Uco or Luján de Cuyo, this is a warm area with generous soils that yield large quantities of grapes. But by managing the vineyard, restricting volumes, and harvesting earlier, they can obtain bonarda like this one, with a firm tannic structure and tense acidity as well as the variety's classic lush and generous black fruit flavors. This is blackberry juice. [Drink through 2024.] Score - 94 (Patricio Tapia, guiadescorchados.cl, 2021) |
