CASTELLO DI AMA |
This single vineyard Gran Selection Chianti Classico is a designation that was only established in 2014. Deep purple red in colour. The truly charming nose shows fine intensity and complexity with lots of plummy, Marasca cherry fruit along with some hints of roses and gentle, earthy-sandalwood, minerally, cassis notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, elegant, intense, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis flavours that linger on the tongue along with bright acidity and gently toasty-vanilla notes. Still youthful, it will improve with extended temperature-controlled aging up to a decade. The grapes - 80% Sangiovese, 13% Merlot and 7% Malvasia Nera - are vinifed separately with individual malolactic fermentation in barrel and are then assembled and aged for 12 months in oak barriques (22% new). It has 13.5% alcohol and under 1 g/L residual sugar with lot number L19184 on the back label. The recommended denser 2016 (***/***+) with 95-points was released on March 20, 2021 at $57.95. |

TASTING NOTE: Cherries, dried flowers and slate on the nose with some fresh mushrooms. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a juicy, chewy finish. Lots of structure and freshness to this. Extremely serious as always. Tight and focused. Try after 2024. [This will cellar into the mid-to-late 2020s.] Score - 96 (jamessuckling.com, Aug. 11, 2021) |
