GRAND CAVE DRY RED 2014 PGI Achaia
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer MEGA SPILEO
This THIRD REPEAT was just tasted from a bottle in the new Vintages shipment. Very deep intense purple colour. Slightly spicy, gently earthy, complex, intense, ripe, plum-cassis-red-cherry nose with some savoury, sandalwood-cedar notes. Dry, medium-full bodied and well structured with intense, fairly dense, slightly spicy, ripe. plum-cherry-cassis flavours are followed with a lingering, faintly earthy, complex, mouthfilling, cedary finish. This blend of 60% Mavrodafni and 40% Mavro Kalavritino was aged for 31 months in oak - 85% French and 15% American. Has 14.5% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar with the same lot number L18212 on the back label. Only 10,000 bottles produced. Serve in a large glass - I enjoy the Riedel Double Magnum Ouverture 001 glass. This recommended best buy 2014 (***) with 93-points was last released on February 6, 2021 at $30.95. CSPC 466110

TASTING NOTE: The Mega Spileo monastery and the awe-inspiring vineyard rest at impressive altitude where some of the great flora grows in the Peloponnese Achaian hills. The Grand Cave is a tale of two indigenous mavros, of daphne and kalavrtya, grapes that define this part of the Greek world. They are beautiful and idiosyncratic, entrusted to the hands of winemaker Stelios Tsiris and naturally interactive in their relationship. The blend is forged by local intuition and knowledge to craft one of Greece's most unique red wines. There are few comparisons and none need to be made. Simply explore the possibility of cultivar and craftsmanship, freshness and longevity. This 2014 from a challenging vintage delivers the best it could under the circumstances for a vivid and hyper-real Achaian experience. Drink 2021-2026. Tasted February 2021.
