Winemaker's Blend Red 2019 VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
Thirty Bench |
Fairly deep intense purple colour. Slightly spicy, fairly cedary, intense, ripe plum nose with hints of cassis and red cherry. Very dry, medium bodied, fairly complex, slightly peppery, plum-cherry-cassis flavours with a lingering, gently cedary finish that has some hints of herbes de Provence. This totally new blend of 74% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot has 13% alcohol and 2.5 g/L residual sugar. Barrel aged in 40% American and 60% French oak. This 2019 Vintages Essential is not up to the much richer recommended best buy 2017 (***) that had 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and was reviewed on November 23, 2019 at $24.95. |

TASTING NOTE: Niagara's reputation for Bordeaux blends has been built upon standouts such as this: a wine that's distinctly Ontario but exudes a Bordeaux sensibility. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot delivers ripe, densely concentrated black cherry, plum, black pepper, cigar box, vanilla, cocoa and smoke. The tannins are firm, shapely, and perfect for steak. |
