Chenin Blanc 2021 WO Swartland
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer Great Heart
NEW in Vintages, this youthful 100% Chenin Blanc has an Extremely pale straw colour. It is initially slightly reductive on the nose with some leesy, nutty, candle wax notes before the cirtus-melon notes emerged. Dry, medium bodied, fairly complex, fairly well structured, somewhat earthy, tangy, dried apricot flavours with a lingering, very crisp, rather nutty, faintly bitter finish. Interesting but hardly seamless and fresh at least today. Fine with poultry and/or lamb, it has 13% alcohol, 1.5 g/L residual sugar and a modest 5.6 g/L total acidity. Some 85% was tank fermented the balance in older French oak barrels. The lot number L1221 on the back label and 25621 on the lower part of the glass bottle. CSPC 24764

TASTING NOTE: I've reported on this philanthropic project of Mullineux and Leeu family wines called Great Heart before, a staff empowerment project the results and profits of which are aimed at improving the circumstances of staff and their families. But good feel aside, the wines are really exceptional, especially in terms of value; this chenin is seamless and fresh, well-balanced, flavourful, with a gently creamy-leesy finish. There's no need to sacrifice moral ethics for pleasure in this case - everything lines up nicely. Drink or hold short term. Tasted September 2021.
