GRAND CAVE VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013 PGI Achaia |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |

MEGA SPILEO |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Extremely deep intense red colour. Lovely, intense, complex, slightly spicy, ripe plum-cassis-black-cherry nose with some floral hints of violets and roses. and sandalwood-tinged, elegant, cedar notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, harmonious, complex, dense, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis-raspberry flavours with a lingering, gently cedary, bright finish. This delicious 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 18 months on fine lees in oak (85% new French and 15% American of which 70% was new). It has 15% alcohol and 2,4 g/L residual sugar with lot number L16222 on the back label and only 12,000 bottles were produced. Showing beautifully and truly outstanding value - one of the best reds I have tasted this year. I suggest laying a few bottles away for future enjoyment. |

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Cave was aged for 24 months in 70% new oak, mostly French. It comes in at 15% alcohol. As with the comparison of other 2012/2013 duos this issue, this is probably the better wine in the long run, maybe even today. Richer and creamier - the winery does love its wood - this seems to have bigger fruit and better balance while retaining fine structure. It is also more complex, with a touch of game. I rather liked that. Some probably won't. We'll see if it holds its balance as it ages, but I'm optimistic. This is certainly built for the long haul, another striking wine from Mega Spileo with plenty of upside potential. It is approachable now but not really ready. Give it some air if you open it now. There is no rush. It should age well, perhaps better than anticipated. It's a terrific wine and a terrific value. Drink date: 2019-2035. Score - 92 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Dec. 28, 2018) |
