OLD VINE RESERVE CHENIN BLANC 2021 WO Stellenbosch |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
KEN FORRESTER |
Assessed from a bottle just purchased at the LCBO. South Africa produces some of the finest, well-priced, Chenin Blancs in the world. and this one is the BEST WHITE WINE BUY of the release! Bright pale straw colour. Intense, fairly spicy, attractive, ripe, lemon-melon-apple meringue nose with some minerally, faintly honeyed, key lime pie notes. Dry, medium bodied, nicely structured, smooth, spicy, intense, fairly complex, ripe, melon-lemon-yellow-plum flavours with a lingering, fairly crisp, faintly honeyed, mineral-tinged, toasty-citrusy finish. This extremely tasty, bargain-priced, crowd-pleaser was barrel and tank fermented (about 50-50) and left on the lees for 19 months French oak (20% new). It has 13.5% alcohol, 4.2 g/L residual sugar and 5.9 g/L total acidity with lot number L2204OM3 on the back label with a screwcap closure. Perfect with poultry - it can age/improve over the next 2 years. |

TASTING NOTE: Ken Forrester is a Chenin specialist, and his ripe, layered old-vine expression of South Africa's signature grape is a classic. It shows peach, apricot, pear, citrus, and a rich, appealing texture influenced by the lees ageing. Pair with smoked salmon, roast chicken, or grill-roasted root vegetables. |
