VIÑA TONDONIA RESERVA 2009 DOCa Rioja |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA |
This one-of-a-kind red from LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA has a deep ruby colour with some garnet undertones. Intense, very complex, spicy, cedary, somewhat dusty, sandalwood-tinged, baked plum-cherry nose with some herbal leafy notes. Very dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, spicy, very complex, minerally, intense, firm, dried plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, high-acid, very cedary, sandalwood-tinged, somewhat bitter, herb-tinged finish. This blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% and Mazuelo and Graciano has 13% alcohol, under 2 g/L residual sugar and 6.6 g/L total acidity with lot number L0934 on the back label. It was aged for six years in 225 L American barrels which were made at the winery from imported Appalachian mountain oak and bottled without filtration. For whatever reason, this half bottle seems a quite tight and austere at the moment. The recommended 750 ml (#356337) was $60.95 on October 2, 2021. I would opt for the more accessible VIÑA BOSCONIA RESERVA 2010 at $49.95 at the moment. |

TASTING NOTE: Sweet berries, cherries, cedar and dried flowers on the nose. Some lemon and lime zest, too! Medium-to full-bodied with tight, integrated tannins that show wonderful length and reserve. So fresh and vivid. Lots of energy. A wonderful, classic wine. Drink or hold. Score - 97 (jamessuckling.com, Feb. 3, 2022) |
