ESTATE GAMAY 2020 Unfiltered, VQA Lincoln Lakeshore, Niagara Peninsula |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
HIDDEN BENCH |
There’s no question that this second release of Hidden Bench organic Estate Gamay Noir is now a two-of-a-kind item. First, there is the colour which is a very deep, intense, violet-red and is unusual for this grape. Second, the nose which is also very intense and complex has initial savoury, slightly reductive, earthy notes. After a few minutes in the glass these notes are swallowed up by a tital wave of Gamay’s,charming, ripe, raspberry-black-cherry fruit. It’s dry, medium bodied, fairly dense and quite mouth filling with vibrant, ripe plum-crancherry-cassis-raspberry flavours with a lingering, faintly tart, leanish finish. The 573 cases are made from special French Gamay clones - 22% were fermented whole cluster. It has 12.5% alcohol, 1 g/L residual sugar and a hefty 7.15 g/L total acidity. It spent 9 months in a mix of French oak (12%) and 56% in neutral barriques. Unfined and unfiltered. |

TASTING NOTE: After the success of the inaugural 2019 vintage Gamay, this sophomore effort comes from grapes picked by hand from five-year-old vines. It's fermented with ambient yeast before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Expect a vibrant wine evoking juicy berry fruit and garden herbs, and pair with roast turkey and sautéed mushrooms. |
