ESTATE PINOT NOIR 2017 VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula |

WESTCOTT |
A SECOND REPEAT of the 2017 (***) that was last released on October 30, 2021 at $29.95. Here is my previous note: Now here is a rather idiosyncratic Pinot Noir that will delight some, while being scorned by others. It’s full-throttle, fairly funky, leathery, high acid, rose hip flavours that would be perfect for a lamb stew! It is far from the Pinot Noir that many wine fans know and love - more of an orange wine interpretation using indigenous yeast, whole cluster wild ferment and minimal filtration. It has a medium ambering red colour with some bricky notes. Intense, complex, butternut squash nose with some ripe wild red cherry and cranberry notes plus buttered toast. Dry, medium to medium-light bodied, very bright, tangy, intense, somewhat peppery, persimmon-tinged, crancherry flavours with a lingering, high acid, faintly smoky, cedary finish. Aged for 22 months in French oak, 25% new oak, it has 12.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar. |

TASTING NOTE: This Pinot Noir makes your mouth water with the first whiff. Smoked meat and damsons on the nose lead to a refreshing entry that's bright and red-fruited. Then the red fruit centre swings toward blueberries before a touch of black earth emerges. Then those smoky-salty-meaty notes found on the nose return on the finish. Such an intriguing and harmonious Pinot Noir from our own backyard. Score - 93 (Carolyn Evans Hammond, Toronto Star, May 27, 2021) |
