BORGOGNO BAROLO 2016 DOCG |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
GIACOMO BORGOGNO |
VINTAGES ONLINE EXCLUSIVE - only 29 cases available. Faintly ambering medium garnet red colour. Intense, complex, red licorice and ripe warm Damson plum nose with some elegant, bright, sandalwood notes. Very dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, slightly spicy, intense, slightly grippy, youthful, ripe Damson plum and cassis flavours with a lingering, sandalwood-tinged, mouthfilling, somewhat savoury, herbal finish. This old school Barolo has 15% alcohol and with 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L17720G on the back label. It may not be for everyone, but it is the best I have tasted yet from Borgogno and needs time to evolve. Let me digress for a moment. It’s astonishing, James Suckling gives this classic Barolo costing $65.95 94-points and, meanwhile, the entry-level, single dimensional, crowd-pleaser, LA POSTA FAZZIO MALBEC 2019 costing $19.95 (one-third of the price and a fraction of the quality) a whopping 93-points in today’s Vintages release. I ask: what is with Suckling’s scoring system? |

TASTING NOTE: Aromas of ripe strawberries with bark, cedar and hazelnuts. Some meaty undertones, too. Fullbodied with a tight palate, but opulent fruit oozes through at the end. Shows lots of promise for the straight-up Barolo. Try after 2023 [or cellar and follow through 2030+]. Score - 94 (jamessuckling.com, July 5, 2021) |
