VERTENTE TINTO 2017 DOC Douro |

I was finally able to get a bottle of this VINTAGES ONLINE EXCLUSIVE on Wednesday March 2 a lengthy 11 day wait after the February 19 release. This field blend of approximately 40% Tinta Roriz, 30% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Amarela and 10% Touriga Nacional was aged for 22 months in French oak. It has a youthful deep purple colour and an attractive, still fresh, gently complex, intense, ripe, Damson plum nose with some faint sandalwood notes. Dry, medium to medium-deep bodied, elegant, bright, plum-cherry fruit with a still youthful, faintly grippy, mid-palate and lingering finish. Perhaps still just a tad lean, this would be a great with a T-bone steak and will show better in a large Bordeaux glass. It has 13.1% alcohol and under 1 g/L residual sugar with lot number 20200917 on the lower part of the glass bottle. It has been a long time coming - the 2002 was released on September 28, 2007 as an ISD at $25.95. |

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Vertente is a field blend of grapes like Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca aged for 20 months in 80% used French barriques. It comes in at 13% alcohol. This was set for bottling in about a week, but it was the final blend and out of cask. I hesitate to rate this too high, but if the Twisted red this issue seemed like the best Twisted, this might be the best Vertente. It is certainly on the shortlist. Elegant, refined, solid in the mid-palate and still filled with flavor, this is fresh and yet still very serious. It has fine structure and grip on the finish. This refined and impeccably balanced tinto is super and easily the best value point in the lineup. It can be drunk now, but it will be better this time next year, and it will hold gracefully for a reasonable time. Drink date: 2020-2033. Score - 92 (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Aug. 30, 2019) |
