MERCUREY VIEILLES VIGNES 2018 AC |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
DOMAINE DU CHATEAU PHILIPPE LE HARDI |
Fairly deep purple-garnet red colour. Attractive, elegant, gently floral, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis purée nose with some raspberry-tinged, mineral-sandalwood notes. Dry, medium bodied, gently complex, tangy, fresh, ripe, plum-cherry-raspberry-cassis flavours with a lingering, bright, mineral-tinged, gently cedary, well textured finish. Delicious and quite ready-to-drink - although it can last for several more years. This fragrant 100% Pinot Noir from the commune of Mercurey just south of Beaune has 13.5% alcohol, under 1 g/L residual sugar and a decent 5.9 g/L total acidity with lot number L211218-09/4 on the back label. From Burgundy's Philippe le Hardi Domaines du Chateau it would be divine with Poulet de Bresse a la creme aux morilles. Of 46 red Mercurey Vintages releases in 20+ years, it's the best of the 40 I have personally reviewed and tasted. |

TASTING NOTE: A heady hint of oak appears first on the nose of this wine but is soon joined by ripe, tart red cherry. That cherry fruit is intense on the palate and comes with concentration and pervasive freshness, all the more remarkable in the warm 2018 vintage. The intense fruit is met by fine tannins and a lovely texture. Score - 92 (Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 1, 2020) |
