SOFIA BLANC DE BLANCS SPARKLING 2018 Monterey County, California |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
FRANCIS COPPOLA |
This very attractively packaged 2018 Blanc de Blancs in pink cellophane would have been perfect for Valentines. At under $17 US this unusual blend of Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Riesling is made for American entry-level wine fans with limited non-Champagne budgets. It hits the mark in the US, but perhaps not so much here at an astonishing $38 a pop. On the positive side it has great effervescence and, despite the impression of sweetness, is well balanced, ready-to-drink and even better than some other popular, off-dry, over-priced sparklers. Pale straw in colour, the nose very spicy, floral, somewhat honeyed and fruity. Ditto for the palate - well balanced, zesty and fresh - easy to quaff like a very good Prosecco but with more effervescence. It has 12% alcohol and 10 g/L residual sugar with lot number LD170 - 220550 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Ten years ago the 2011 was priced at $19.95 in Vintages (#128314) |

TASTING NOTE: This intriguing blend of Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Riesling is zesty and fresh, with lifted floral aromatics and suggestions of apple, pear, citrus and honeysuckle. A great sipper, it would be an ideal companion for a special brunch. |
