SOFIA BLANC DE BLANCS SPARKLING 2018 Monterey County, California
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer FRANCIS COPPOLA
This very attractively packaged 2018 Blanc de Blancs in pink cellophane would have been perfect for Valentines. At under $17 US this unusual blend of Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Riesling is made for American entry-level wine fans with limited non-Champagne budgets. It hits the mark in the US, but perhaps not so much here at an astonishing $38 a pop. On the positive side it has great effervescence and, despite the impression of sweetness, is well balanced, ready-to-drink and even better than some other popular, off-dry, over-priced sparklers. Pale straw in colour, the nose very spicy, floral, somewhat honeyed and fruity. Ditto for the palate - well balanced, zesty and fresh - easy to quaff like a very good Prosecco but with more effervescence. It has 12% alcohol and 10 g/L residual sugar with lot number LD170 - 220550 on
the lower part of the glass bottle. Ten years ago the 2011 was priced at $19.95 in Vintages (#128314)
