GREYWACKE RIESLING 2020 Marlborough, South Island |

I am pleased to see this new 2020 Vintage return after the delicious 2018 (***) that was released on October 31, 2020 at $29.95. Great Riesling is one of New Zealand’s best kept secret and this is one of them. Here is a classy, rich, slightly off-dry, Marlborough Riesling that would work perfectly with poultry and/or a wide variety of vegan dishes. Bright pale straw colour, the nose is remarkably inciting - intense aromas of ripe apple-melon-lemon meringue leap out of the glass with hints of petrol and lots of mineral notes. It’s off dry with 19 g/L residual sugar and medium bodied, very nicely textured and perfectly balanced with rich, spicy, ripe, lemon-apple meringue flavours that show great length with an abundance of minerality on the lingering, bright finish. Aged in neutral barrels, where it remained on yeast lees for 5 months prior to bottling in November 2020. Extremely tasty now, it is capable for aging/evolving for many more years. It has 11.8% alcohol, 19 g/L residual sugar and 7.7 g/L total acidity with 20330 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Screwcap closure. Shades of Alsatian Vendage Tardif, it so good and easy to drink that having to order two bottles of this Online Exclusive is a blessing. |

TASTING NOTE: Seductive bouquet of wild flowers and minerals, a fine leesy complexity and fresh aromas and flavours of citrus, peach tea and sweet hay. Crisp, refreshing, fruity and dry with fine texture. Just enough concentration of flavour to contrast the fresh herb notes and salivating acidity. Well made and long. Drinking window: 2021-2028. Score - 95 (Cameron Douglas, MS, decanter.com, Jan. 11, 2021) |
