LA CAPPUCCINA |
This ONLINE EXCLUSIVE is NEW in Vintages. An unusual blend of 90% Carmenère with 10% of the indigenous Oseleta from the 90 acre LA CAPPUCCINA vineyard which has been owned by the Tessari family since 1890. Very deep intense purple colour, the nose which initially has some faintly peppery, herbal notes seems to take on a very interesting, more relaxed, Bordeaux-inspired Cabernet Sauvignon character with some hints of minerally sandalwood. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, very slightly earthy, fairly complex, firm but ripe plummy flavours with a lingering, bright, gently grippy, attractive, slightly cedary finish. Aged for 14 months in new French oak. I think that it is best paired with roast beef or perhaps a grilled steak. It has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L.712 on the back label. It grew on me and is certainly worthy of a try or a buy if you are a fan. |

TASTING NOTE: This unique wine is mostly Carmenère, making it a rarity in an Italian context, and it doubles down on the intrigue by adding a splash of the even-rarer indigenous grape Oseleta. Saved from extinction in the 1980s, Oseleta adds colour and tannin to this complex, refined, appealing wine, with its notes of dark berry, pepper spice, clove and vanilla. Pair with roast lamb or grilled sausages. |
