NOSTRE PAÏS 2018 AP Costières de Nîmes
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer MICHEL GASSIER
A REPEAT of the recommended best buy 2018 (***) that was released on June 26, 2021 at $23.95. Here is updated review from a bottle just purchased from the LCBO with a NEW lot number L21/193 (previous L21/068) on the lower part of the glass bottle. Fairly deep intense purple colour. Very attractive, spicy, intense, fresh, ripe, plummy-raspberry puree nose with some floral, complex cedary notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, spicy, intense, ripe plum-cherry-raspberry puree flavours with a lingering, fairly high acid, gently cedary, blueberry-tinged finish. Quite ready-to-drink. Brilliantly made: manual harvest with sorting - 1/3 whole cluster and 2/3 whole berries without adding SO2 followed up by 12 month barrel aging in 2-to-3-year-old French oak for 6 months with malolactic lees for 50% of the wine and the balance concrete tank! This very tasty organic blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre, 5% Carignan and 5% Cinsault has 15% alcohol and 3 g/L residual sugar. Note that the great mouthfeel is in part attributable to blending and bottling without filtration. CSPC 295410

TASTING NOTE: Surprisingly, the 2018 Costières de Nîmes Nostre Païs had not been bottled at the time of this tasting. Nevertheless, it continues to show beautifully, with a perfumed, medium to full-bodied, finesse-driven, elegant style that I would happily drink today. Giving up lots of both red and black fruits, garrigue, candied violets, and ground pepper, it has both richness and elegance and certainly competes with any number of base Châteauneuf du Papes that sell for quite a bit more.
