BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2016 Estate bottled, DOCG
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer LA TORRE
This small estate of only 5.6 hectares only produces Brunello di Montalcino Riserva only in outstanding years. This is only the second appearance in Vintages. This lovely Brunello is loaded with elegant violet-rose floral notes along with classy old-school Sangiovese nuances. It has a medium deep garnet red colour with a delicate amber-tinged edge. The nose shows intense, gently complex, ripe, Damson plum with some dried red cherry fruit along with sandalwood-nuanced dried roses. Dry medium-full bodied, intense, sandalwood-rose-tinged, ripe plum and bright dried red cherry flavours abound balanced by a still youthful, faintly tannic bricky notes and a long lingering, fairly high acid finish. The intense mouthfeel is due to a lack of filtration and hence higher dry extract, which is a very good thing for longevity. It has 13% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L08/20 on the front label. Just so you know, the wine was aged for 48 months in large 39-hectolitres barrels of Slavonian oak with 17% spending 18 months in smaller French barrique. The recommended 2015 (***/***+) with 95-points was released on March 6, 2021 at $62.95. CSPC 17626

TASTING NOTE: Each year I enjoy a special fascination with the wines made by La Torre di Luigi Ananža. That's because they alway promise purity and tradition. From a terrific vintage, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a finely textured and smooth expression with plenty of wild berry, blue flower, cola and crushed stone. What I get most, however, is dried tobacco leaf like what you would smell at a tobacco-curing facility. These are classic Sangiovese aromas, and they are displayed with clean and confident intensity. The tannins are soft, and for that reason you can approach this wine in the medium term, or wait to age it longer. Drink date: 2023-2043.
