VIÑA BOSCONIA RESERVA 2009 DOCa Rioja, Spain
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer R. LOPEZ DE HEREDIA
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Founded in 1877, this family-run bodega is the oldest in Haro and was one of the first three in Rioja. It has a cult-like following and produces a consistent style that drives their fans wild. The family strives for the best by using the latest technology but steadfastly refuses to alter their style to try and score higher points from today’s critics who often fawn over highly alcoholic blockbuster reds. This beauty has a very deep intense ruby-red colour with a tight amber edge. The nose is very intense and complex with mineral-driven, expansive, ripe, Damson-plum-cassis-cherry fruit along with lots of cedary notes. Very dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, rather grippy, dense, intense, plum-red-cherry-cassis-persimmon flavours with some peppery-mineral notes on the lingering, tangy, rather cedary, high acid, gamey finish. Aged 5 years in American oak (225 litres), this has a hefty 6.5 g/L total acidity and is unfiltered. This blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano with no Garnacha has 13.5% alcohol and under 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L-0815 on the back label. NEEDS TIME - a decade would help. Better than the recommended 2008 (***) was released on November 28, 2020 at $51.95. Be aware, this style is not for everyone. CSPC 529586

A Best Buy
TASTING NOTE: Very ripe still, with crushed berry and light jam. Vanilla undertones to the fruit. Turns to flowers, both fresh and dried. Complex cedar, tobacco and walnut. It's full-bodied with round, soft tannins and a flavorful finish. Richer than past vintages, but turns linear and refined at the finish. Drink now [through 2025+].
