OLD VINES GRENACHE/SYRAH/MOURVÈDRE 2018 AP Côtes du Roussillon, Midi, France
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer TESSELLAE
Assessed from a new bottle just purchased at the LCBO. Lets play guess the grape. The SAQ says the 2018 is a blend of 40% Grenache, 40 % Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre. The review in the Vintages Catalogue says 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10%Mourvèdre. Meanwhile, an email from the producer says that this ever-popular blend is actually 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. It has a deep intense purple colour and an attractive, juicy, ripe, plum-cherry puree nose with some faintly smoky, sandalwood notes. Dry, medium bodied, gently spicy, bright, juicy, ripe black-cherry-plum-cassis flavours with a lingering, tangy, gently mineral-tinged, harmonious finish. Owner Jean-Marc Lafage ages this red in concrete in order to highlight the natural fruit flavours. It has 14.5% alcohol and 5 g/L residual sugar with lot number L21193A on the lower part of the glass bottle. This repeat is better than the recommended best buy 2018 (**/**+) that was last released on February 20, 2021 at $19.95. CSPC 343517

A Best Buy
TASTING NOTE: Kirsch, blackberries, flowers, and peppery garrigue notes all emerge from the 2018 Tessellae Old Vines. Medium to full-bodied, with a beautifully balanced, elegant style, ripe tannins, and a great finish, this will stand up to many a top Châteauneuf du Pape. The blend is 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre. Score - 93 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, March 22, 2021) Price $ 19.95
