LAGREIN 2019 DOC Südtirol-Alto Adige
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer KELLEREI BOZEN
The Vintages Catalogue and LCBO invoice says that this is the 2020, but in fact, only the 2019 appeared on the LCBO shelf and that is what I got! Now I have another chance to taste this 2019 that was recently released on May 29, 2021 at $22.95. Thank heavens, because who would have guessed that it would be tasting so much better exactly 5 months later. It seems richer, riper and rounder - 90-points a Recommended Best Buy (make sure that it has lot number L8.0335 on the back label). Meanwhile, I had to go out and buy a bottle of the 2020 that was not on the shelf. Very deep intense purple colour with a very attractive, ripe, plummy, black cherry nose with some mineral notes. Dry, medium bodied and nicely structured with bright, ripe, plum-cassis-cherry flavours followed up by a crisp, lingering, sandalwood-tinged, mineral-driven finish. Delicious - it has 13.5% alcohol, 3 g/L residual sugar and with lot number L2.1131 on the back label. CSPC 17637

TASTING NOTE: Lagrein is thinner skinned grape making lighter fruity wines in the high country of sub-alpine Alto Adige. This has more colour than I expected and very ripe youthful nose of blackberry, peony florality, a hint of chocolate and some hay. It is medium bodied, very ripe yet showing good vibrant acidity and moderate tannin. The length is very good to excellent. Score - 89 (David Lawrason, winealign.com, Jan. 22, 2021) Price $ 23.95
