VIÑA TONDONIA RESERVA 2009 DOCa Rioja
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA
This one-of-a-kind classic from LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA has a fairly deep ruby colour with some garnet undertones and an amber rim. Intense, complex, slightly spicy, gently cedary, sandalwood-tinged, plum-cherry purée nose with some violets and faintly leafy notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, quite well structured, slightly spicy, fairly complex, minerally, intense, youthful, plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, rather high-acid, gently cedary, sandalwood-tinged finish. This new 2009 blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% and Mazuelo and Graciano has 13% alcohol, under 2 g/L residual sugar and 6.6 g/L total acidity with lot number L0888 on the back label. It was aged for six years in 225 L American barrels which were all made at the winery from imported Appalachian mountain oak and bottled without filtration. This 2009 seems more youthful and grippier than the recommended best buy 2008 (***/***+) with 96-points that was released on April 17, 2021 at $63.95. Buy and lay away for at least 5 years. TASTING NOTE: Serious and concentrated, at least by the standards of some López de Heredia reds, this reflects the heat of the 2009 vintage. Tempranillo-based with 30% Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, it's spicy, savoury and high toned with grippy tannins, layers of tobacco and red fruits and classic, supporting acidity. Drink date: 2021-2030. Score - 94 (Tim Atkin, MW, timatkin.com, Rioja Special Report 2021) Price $ 60.95
