KADETTE CAPE BLEND 2018 WO Stellenbosch
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer KANONKOP
Sadly all 2,688 bottles of this NEW Vintages release were removed from the Vintages Catalogue and not set to the stores. Am early casualty of the new Vintages Online Exclusive programme. I finally received a bottle from the agent well after the September 4 “release” date - here is my review. Bright deep purple-ruby colour. Bight, fairly intense, ripe, Damson plum nose with hints of cassis and black cherry along with some savoury notes. Very dry, medium bodied, well structured, faintly herbal, firm dark plum fruit along with some crancherry notes followed up lingering, gently cedary, faintly earthy finish. This well-priced distinctive new blend of 37% Pinotage, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot was matured for 12-14 (not 24) months in 225L French Nevers barrels. It has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number 24710 on the lower part of the glass bottle and on the back label. Definitely worth trying, as of October 14 (six weeks after the “release”) only 9% sold with 2,434 bottles remaining. Why? The inconvenience of buying online plus having to spend over $50 to just place an order for an $18.95 wine. Update - as of December 26 there are still 1,238 bottles in 10 stores. The Coravned bottle is showing better than ever! Vintages Online Exclusive are truly a curse for enllghtened consumers and struggling sgents! CSPC 21108

TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Kadette Cape Blend comprises 37% Pinotage, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, matured for 12-24 months in French barrels from Nevers. The bouquet offers a mixture of red and black plums, a touch of white pepper and a light Provençal herb note. It opens nicely with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins and crisp acidity that lends an appealing edginess. A little earthy in style, but the fruit comes through toward the finish and leaves residues of black pepper and tangy seaweed on the finish. This is a supremely well made Cape Blend from Kanonkop. Drinking window: 2021-2030. Score - 91 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Feb. 2021) Price $ 18.95
