Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer Maison Lafage
This consistent crowd-pleaser has a bright very deep intense purple-ruby colour. The nose is intense, very spicy, fairly complex and quite juicy with ripe plum-cherry-cassis purée fruit along with some cedar-mocha-chocolate-sandalwood notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, very spicy, intense, ripe, plummy-black-cherry purée flavours with a mineral-tinged and what seems to be a rather cedary lingering finish. This blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 30% Cinsault is half aged in demi-muids, the other half in concrete tanks and has 15% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L20307A on the lower part of the glass bottle. TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Chimères is 40% Grenache and 30% each Carignan and Syrah, aged 14 months in a combination of concrete tanks and oak demi-muids. Like virtually all of the Lafageaffiliated wines, it overdelivers for the price, offering up bushels of blueberries, cherries and stone fruit, tamed into savoriness on the finish by hints of wood spice and black olives. It's full-bodied and concentrated but supple, making it drinkable now and over the next five or so years. Impressively, this is a stronger effort than the 2017. Drink date: 2020- 2025.
