KILLER DROP RED 2018 California
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer 689 Cellars
NEW in Vintages, this “killer” California blend of Grenache, Syrah & Petite Sirah was aged for 10 months in French oak (30% new). My co-taster says that the packaging (especially the extremely heavy bottle), the high price tag and the smooth, juicy, cedary flavours seem to have been designed to impress wine neophytes and are certainly not for experienced California wine lovers. From my perspective, it’s what’s in the bottle that counts. This is well made and will certainly appeal to some. Deep purple red colour, the nose shows some juicy, ripe, plum-cherry purée fruit along with some chocolate-cedar notes. It’s fairly dry, medium to medium-full bodied, harmonious, slightly spicy, smooth, plummy-black-cherry purée flavours and a long, bright, gently cedary finish. It has 14.5% alcohol and an estimated 10 g/L residual sugar with lot number L202321529M on the lower part of the glass bottle.
