ALEXANDER VALLEY MERLOT 2016 Sustainable, Alexander Valley, Sonoma County
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer MATANZAS CREEK
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. It has been a very long time since I have seen this wine in Vintages. Twenty years ago it used to have around 75% Merlot, now it’s almost 99% with some Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a youthful very deep intense purple ruby colour and an intense, very toasty, cedar-driven nose with lots of of slightly spicy, ripe, plum-black-cherry fruit along with some leathery notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, slightly spicy, bright, intense, ripe, plummy-black-cherry flavours with a lingering, somewhat cedary, fairly high acid, mineral-tinged finish. It has 14.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with ”Lot Date: 20180601” on the back label (132615218MB2 on the lower part of the glass bottle). CSPC 932806

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Merlot Alexander Valley contains a 0.4% splash of Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged 18 months in 28% new French oak. It has a medium to deep ruby color and scents of leather, cinnamon toast, cedar, tobacco leaves, bitter chocolate, dried herbs and graphite. Medium to full-bodied, it offers mineral-laced fruits wrapped in a chalky frame, finishing with great freshness and length. This is approachable and delicious right now. Drink date: 2020-2026.
