Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer Torre de Ona
I know that it's not inexpensive, but it is one of the highest quality Spanish reds I have tasted this year. On April 1 this Classics selection was shifted to Vintages. Unfortunately, it is misidentified by the LCBO. It's not Torre de Oña Reserva but the winery’s top FINCA MARTELO. Deep intense red in colour, it has an intense, very attractive, complex, intense, ripe warm Damson plum and black cherry nose accompanied by some minerally, cedar-sandalwood notes. Dry, full bodied, rich and very bright, the intense, rounded, ripe plum-raspberry-cherry fruit flavours are followed up with a long, lingering, fairly high acid, classy, faintly savoury, sandalwood-cedar-mineral-tinged finish. This blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura were all hand-selected by winemaker Julio Sáenz. All 100% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrels for 96 days in new American and French oak, which explains the integration and rounded tannins. This was followed by aging for two years in 80% American and 20% French oak. It has 14.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L-14M/19 on the back label. Assessed from a bottle I purchased at the LCBO. The Torre de Ona Reserva 2009 (***) was released on January 24, 2014 at $29.95. CSPC 397117

The wrong TASTING NOTE is posted on the LCBO website: Tempranillo with a splash of Mazuelo; French and Caucasian oak. A denser, darker style with a liquorice saltiness and dark, olive-like characters, some balsamic and a slight Cabernet Franc-like pyrazine-green character. Texturally there is grain and grip, lots of tannin. Impressive. Drinking window: 2020-2030. Score - 93. (David Williams, decanter.com, Feb. 14, 2020) Price $ 59.00
