MONASTRELL 2018 DO Alicante
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer LAS QUEBRADAS
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. This hefty, youthful 100% Monastrell was fermented in open-top wooden tanks and aged in 500 L Allier oak barrels for 16 months followed by two years of refinement in the bottle. It has deep intense purple colour with an elegant, still somewhat closed, fresh Damson plum nose and ja mineral-tinged hint of oak. Dry, medium-full bodied, very well structured, intense, high acid, youthful, firm plum fruit with a lingering, high acid, slightly peppery, dense, gently cedary finish. Definitely needs time and a big glass - try in 3-4 years. It has 14.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L-16020-Q on the back label. The 2015 was released on July 20, 2019 at $45.95. TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Las Quebradas is pure Monastrell from a dry-farmed and head-pruned vineyard with very poor soils covered in limestone boulders (caliche). It fermented with indigenous yeasts in square oak vats with manual punch-downs of the cap. It matured in Allier barrels for 16 months. It feels very young and still marked by the élevage. The palate is terribly stony and mineral with a chalky texture, serious and powerful with terrific balance. In general, these 2018s are a little more delicate and fresher than the 2017s, which were very Mediterranean. Wait a bit to pull the cork. Drink date: 2021-2028.
