VIÑA TONDONIA RIOJA RESERVA 2008 DOCa Rioja
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer R. LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA
A REPEAT (150 cases) of the recommended 2008 (***/***+) that was released on October 31, 2020 at $61.95. Here is my previous note: This one-of-a-kind classic from LÓPEZ DE HEREDIA has a fairly deep slightly amber-tinged ruby colour with some garnet undertones. Intense, complex, fairly spicy, quite cedary, sandalwood-tinged, ripe, maturing, plum-cherry purée nose with some violets and faintly leafy, autumnal forest floor notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, well structured, slightly spicy, complex and yet refined, Bordeaux-inspired, minerally, fairly intense, ripe, harmonious, plum-cherry flavours with an attractive, lingering, rather high-acid, gently cedary, sandalwood-tinged finish. According to the back label, this new blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha and 10% Mazuelo (no Graciano) has 13% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L0720 on the back label. It was aged for six years in 225 L American barrels which are all made at the winery from imported Appalachian mountain oak and bottled without filtration. This 2008 seems a tad riper with lovely balance and freshness and is more accessible than the recommended best buy 2007 (***/***+) with 95-points that was released on April 18, 2020 at $59.95. TASTING NOTE: Tondonia's reds have been on an upward curve recently and are now at the same level as the bodega's world-class whites. This is a fine, elegant, savoury, low-alcohol blend of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha and 5% each of Mazuelo and Graciano, combining summer berry fruit, racy acidity, granular tannins and an earthy, balsamic undertone. Good now, but this will develop further in bottle. Drink date: 2020-2028. Score - 97 (timatkin.com, Rioja Special Report 2020) Price $ 61.95
Bottle Size 750 mL
