Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer VILLA SYMPOSIA
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. This 2017 blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Carignan, 10% Cinsault, 5% Grenache and 5%Mourvèdre offers lots of flavour for the money. Deep intense purple colour, the nose is intense, spicy and quite fruity with lots of ripe plummy-black-cherry notes along with refined cedary notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, harmonious, well structured, ripe, intense, plum-cherrry puree flavours with a lingering, very bright, cedar-mocha-chocolate-tinged finish. Quite ready to drink, the crowd-pleaser has 14% alcohol and 3 g/L residual sugar with lot number L02 on the back label. CSPC 298620

TASTING NOTE: A Syrah-heavy blend aged primarily in second use barrels, the 2017 Pezenas L'Equilibre delivers scents of creosote and black olives, gradually opening up to reveal blackberry and loam. It's medium to full-bodied, with supple tannins and subtle notes of pencil shavings framing the ample fruit. It does finish with a bit of astringency, so give it a year to settle down, then drink it over the next 3-4 years. Drink date: 2020-2024.
