DOMAINE DE BEYSSAC INITIAL 2016 AP Côtes du Marmandais
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer DOMAINE DE BEYSSAC
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. NEW in Vintages. Deep intense purple colour, the nose is surprisingly fresh and fragant with ripe plummy, crancherry fruit along with a hint of sandalwood and garrigue. Dry, medium bodied, well structured, slightly spicy, ripe, plu-crancherry flavours with a lingering, fairly high acid, gently complex finish. According to the producer, this tasty apparently unfined and lightly filtered blend of approximately Merlot (68%) / Malbec (20%) Cabernet Franc (8%) / Abouriou (4%) has whopping 15% alcohol and according to the LCBO website 4 g/L residual sugar and is unoaked and only aged for 11 months in stainless steel vats.

TASTING NOTE: An organic merlot, cabernet franc, malbec and local abourriou blend, this is fragrant and ripe wine from the deep Southwest of France (not far from Bordeaux but inland), with an appealingly rustic, savoury edge but also skilled winemaking in evidence, clean and pure. Tannins are still a little rough-and-tumble, so another 1-2 years in the cellar is recommended, or decant and serve with salty protein. Length and depth are solid. Worth discovering.
