Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer PLANETA
The FRAPPATO grape variety is not on everyone’s hit list. Indeed, in the last 20 years, this is only the fourth release of it’s kind in Vintages and the third from the esteemed Planeta winery who first started producing wine from this indigenous rare Sicilian variety grown in Vittorio on the southeast coast only 8 years ago. There seems to be be something magical about this 2018 Frappato besides being the best I have taased. It has a lightish medium deep red colour and a gently complex, slightly spicy, faint red licorice-tinged, fresh, ripe plum-cherry-pomegranate nose with some mineral notes. Dry, medium to medium-light bodied and yet well structured, it has bright, ripe, perfectly integrated, plum-red-cherry-strawberry flavours with a wonderful, lingering, fairly high acid, licorice-tinged, sandalwood-ish finish. It seems perfectly ready-to-drink and yet has a refreshing seam of acidity running through it suggesting that it can still age. Made 100% from Frappato with no oak, it has 12.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L160091 on the lower part of the glass bottle. CSPC 508655
