Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer LAVAU
Lavau is a shining example of what can be done in the Southern Rhone at a reasonable price. Located just north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vacqueyras was not granted its own AOC until 1990. This new 2017 is an exceptional value. Deep intense purple colour, it has a somewhat spicy, intense, gently complex, faintly smoky, ripe plum-cherry puree nose with some sandalwood-cedar notes. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, harmonious, intense, ripe plum-cherry-cassis flavours with a slightly spicy, gently cedary, lingering, high acid finish with elegant rounded tannins. A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre with 14.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L170601G on the lower part of the glass bottle. To keep fruit-focused, only 40% of the wine is aged in previously used barrels - the balance in vat before being assembled after 12 months. CSPC 104927

TASTING NOTE: Attractive orange blossom and ginger with red cherries and raspberries, too. The palate has a very succulent, juicy and smoothly arranged feel with a wealth of very attractive tannins, curling gently to blood-orange and bitter-chocolate notes at the finish. Drink or hold.
