Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CASTELLO DI AMA
This single vineyard Gran Selection Chianti Classico is a designation that was only established in 2014. Only 4 bottles in 100 might qualify and the quality/price ratio between labels can vary immensely. Thankfully, this 2016 blend of 80% Sangiovese, 13% Merlot and 7% Malvasia Nera deserves your attention. Deep purple red in colour, the nose shows great intensity and complexity with lots of plummy, Marasca cherry fruit along with some hints of roses and earthy-sandalwood-tinged, minerally, cassis notes. Dry, full bodied, rich, dense, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis flavours that linger on the tongue along with bright acidity and the solid toasty-licorice notes. Still very young, it will improve with extended temperature-controlled aging up to a decade or so. The three varieties are vinifed separately with individual malolactic fermentation in barrel and are then assembled and aged for 12 months in oak barriques (22% new). It has 13.5% alcohol and under 1 g/L residual sugar with lot number L18186 on the back label. NEW in Vintages. CSPC 12751

TASTING NOTE: A blend of 80% Sangiovese, 13% Merlot and 7% Malvasia Nera, this opens with aromas of blackand red-skinned berry, pipe tobacco, tilled earth and a whiff of new leather. Elegant and taut, the palate shows tension, verve and finesse, delivering juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and hints of French oak. It's balanced, with polished, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Drink 2021-2036. Cellar Selection. Score - 96 (Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2020) Price $ 57.95
