Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer BERONIA
This is the first Beronia “Vinas Viejas” (old vines) to appear in Vintages. In this case, it is the best bunches of Tempranillo grapes
grown in their 50 year-old vineyards. These wines are considered better because old vines have lower yields meaning greater concentration of flavours. In terms of density and mouthfeel, this 2017 has it in spades. The initial fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel is followed by malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels and then followed by 9 months aging in mixed oak barrels, made of American oak staves and French oak ends. The former staves gives the wine a hint of Bourbon and sandalwood! It has a bright deep intense purple-ruby colour. The nose shows lots of complexity and great fruit concentration (plums, blackberries and cherries) along with lots of cedary notes. It’s dry, medium-full bodied and well structured with lots of cedary, intense, very bright, plum-cherry flavours along with a high acid, lingering finish. It has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L30820BC on the lower part of the glass bottle. It can aged and evolve over the next decade and calls for a large glass to pull out all the flavours. NEW in Vintages.
