FINCA AZAYA 2017 Castilla y Léon
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer VALDUERO
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Just northwest of Madrid is the Castilla y Léon which stretches roughly 350 kilometers from the center of Spain to the north coast and runs from the Rioja wine region to the border of Portugal. This is the Valduero cooperative’s entry-level edition of it’s three Azaya. All 100% Tempranillo but in this case with only 14 months in American and European oak which is fine for me. Deep intense purple-red in colour, the nose shows lots of intense ripe fruit - red and black berries with a touch of black olive and considerable oakiness. Dry, medium to medium-full bodied, spicy, somewhat rustic, intense, ripe, dark plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, well textured, cedary, Bourbon-tinged finish. It has 14.5% alcohol and 4 g/L residual sugar. It seems a bit cramped in my ISO glass, although something larger might work miracles. NEW in Vintages. CSPC 18676

TASTING NOTE: 100% Tempranillo. This wine from Old Castille took our judges off the beaten Tempranillo path, but everyone loved its alluring liveliness, its grace, its shapeliness and its charm. It's dark black in colour with ripe berry scents backed by bay-leaf and oak-copse complexities. The palate is mouth-filling yet softly textured, with more red berry fruits in a settled and balanced style. A mist of fine tannins adds textural interest, but it's the intrinsic quality of the fruit itself which its creators have wisely decided to put centre stage. This is a hugely amenable red capable of partnering a wide range of dishes with panache. Drink date: 2019-2025. Best in Show. Score - 97 (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2019) Price $ 31.95
