CALVARY HILL SHIRAZ 2018 Lyndoch, Barossa, South Australia |

Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. It was fun to compare this one on one with the slightly less expensive McLaren Vale. While both were very good, this richer, denser Barossa Shiraz had some rather spicy notes that I personally struck me as being mildly distracting. Extremely deep intense purple colour. Intense, rather spicy, bright, faintly baked, ripe black cherry puree nose with some slightly smoky, tropical fruit cocktail notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, mineral-tinged, slightly spicy, tangy, ripe plum-cherry purée flavours with a lingering, cedary, fairly high acid, faintly bitter mocha-chocolate finish. Ready-to-drink. Only 2,361 cases of 12 were produced. It has 14.5% alcohol and 3.8g/L residual sugar with 6.5 g/L total acidity and lot number L0193 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Screwcap closure. The recommended 2017 (**/**+) was released on December 7, 2019 at $19.95. |

TASTING NOTE: Crafted in a classic Barossa style, this wine is consistently generous, offering suggestions of ripe blackberry, peppercorn and dark chocolate wrapped in soft, smooth tannins. Expect a versatile everyday red that's perfect for pork chops or roast lamb but also has the flair for holiday dining.
