TOURIGA NACIONAL 2017 Vinho Regional Alentejano |

HERDADE SÃO MIGUEL |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Alentejo is a huge hot dry region about 1.5 hours east of Lisbon and stretches almost down to the south coast. Located in the subregion of Redondo (east of Evora in the middle of the Alentejo). It is a new, modern, very progressive, quality-focused winery and has only appeared in Vintages once before. Unfortunately, there isn’t much of this estate-grown Touriga Nacional - only 6,700 bottles (558 cases). It has a vibrant ruby-purple colour and an elegant, gently spicy, ripe, plum-cherry-pomegranate nose with some gentle sandalwood notes. Dry, medium bodied, harmonious and very nicely structured, it has very pleasing, fairly intense, bright, ripe Damson-plum-black-cherry fruit flavours that show excellent persistence with some slight minerally, faintly toasty, cranberry notes (aged 12 months in mature 400 litre French oak barrels). With 13.5% alcohol and 3 g/L residual sugar, this lovely red makes grilled meats an obvious choice, but it should also work nicely with turkey! NEW in Vintages. |

TASTING NOTE: Aged for nine months in barrel, this wine has brought out the style of this iconic grape variety. The perfumed character is classic, with rich black fruits and a strong core of tannins. The wine is still developing, so drink from 2021. Score - 92 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2019) |
