PINOT NOIR 2017 VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer WESTCOTT ESTATE
Assessed from a bottle provided by the winery. Now here is a rather idiosyncratic Pinot Noir that will delight some, while being scorned by others. Itís full-throttle, fairly funky, leathery, high acid, rose hip nose/flavours that would be perfect for a lamb stew! I last reviewed the 2013 on September 15, 21018 and wasnít too keen. If anything, this is much better, but is far from the Pinot Noir that most wine fans know and love. In fact, itís more of an orange wine interpretation using indigenous yeast, whole cluster wild ferment and minimal filtration. Here goes - medium ambering red colour with some bricky notes. Intense, complex, butternut squash nose with some ripe wild red cherry and cranberry notes plus buttered toast. Dry, medium to medium-light bodied, very bright, tangy, intense, somewhat peppery, persimmon-tinged, crancherry flavours with a lingering, high acid, faintly smoky, cedary finish. Aged for 22 months in French oak, 25% new oak, it has 12.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar.

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 vintage offers the same alcohol as 2016 stated at 12.5% on the bottle. The vintage conditions were much cooler throughout the summer. I would say this has a bit more harmony with flavours and the cherry, and cranberry notes dance harmoniously with violets. Compared to 2016 the winemaking was a little more hands off with indigenous yeast and minimal filtration being done to this wine. The tannin is already soft and integrated - so this is ready to rock if you're looking for something to drink now - but a few years in a cellar won't hurt at all.
