PAPER ROAD PINOT NOIR 2018 Wairarapa, North Island |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |
Producer |
Paddy Borthwick |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. If there ever was a really happy, relaxed, ripe, fruity, cherry-raspberry driven Pinot Noir - this is it! The Borthwick family with their vineyards in Gladstone - the heart of the Wairarapa - have a well-priced winner. Medium-deep ruby red colour, the attractive, fresh, slightly spicy, ripe, raspberry-plum-crancherry fruit-driven nose comes with gentle cedary notes. Dry, on the light side of medium bodied, very bright, fairly intense, ripe, fruity,raspberry-plum-cherry flavours with a lingering, fairly high acid finish. Aged in 85% French oak for 8 months (15% new) while the balance of 15% was in stainless steel (the latter accounting for lifted total acidity and freshness). It has 13.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number 19336 on the lower part of the glass bottle and 5145 on the back label. The recommended 2016 (**+) was released on July 7, 2018 at $26.95. |

TASTING NOTE: Fresh, pure and nicely ripe red cherries abound with gently spicy allure. There's a very supple and fleshy feel here that carries a wealth of ripe cherries and sappy, succulent tannin. Drink now [to 2022+]. Score - 92 (jamessuckling.com, Oct. 16, 2019) |
