RISERVA CHIANTI CLASSICO 2015 DOCG |

BRANCAIA |
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. On August 3, 2019 the recommended 2013 (***) with 90-points was released at $38.95. I thought that it was great - but this is even better - riper, brighter and more complex! It has a fairly deep ruby-purple colour and yet has a very faint amber tinge on the rim. The nose is lovely and surprisingly complex focused on slightly spicy, ripe, Damson plums and red and black cherry puree with some elegant, very faintly earthy, minerally, cedary notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, very attractive, well-structured, slightly spicy, intense, harmonious, ripe plum-cherry flavours with a long, lingering, gently cedary, fairly high acid, cassis-sandalwood-tinged finish. It has great texture and mouthfeel and would be great in a large Burgundy glass. A blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot, it has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L.TO400CA on the back label. Aged for 16 months in 50% new and 50% used tonneaux and barriques - tonneaux for Sangiovese- barriques for Merlot. Everything was bottled in April 2017 which helps explains the lovely, harmonious, integrated flavours and texture. It’s a beauty. |

TASTING NOTE: A spicy Chianti Classico Riserva showing dried red plums, dried roses, mahogany, forest floor, cedar, white truffles, wet earth and leather. But it's all so fresh and delightful. The palate's so focused and refined as the firm, wonderfully savory tannins dance between layers of dried fruit, which remains so pure due to the wealth of punchy acidity. Hints of orange rind on the long finish. Like a baby Brunello. [Decant for one hour tonight or] Drink in 2024. Score - 95 (jamessuckling.com, Sept. 11, 2018) |
