PRIVILÈGE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016 AC
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer CHÂTEAU MAUCOIL
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. I was looking forward to tasting this new Vintages release because Intense, have not had it before and it comes highly recommended. Thankfully at $85.95 I am not disappointed especially as I just assessed a very fine Southern Rhone 2016 Gigondas on release at exactly half the price. Of course, some will ask “is it worth twice the price?” My answer, yes if you can afford it. This scores 95.5-points, the other 92.5-points. The two wines are quite different. First, this is a very low-yield blend of 50% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, 8% Cinsault, 5% Clairette and Bourboulenc, etc. all coming from the Domaine’s oldest vines (70 years on average). It has a deep intense ruby-red colour. The nose shows ripe, blueberry, Damson plum, dark cherry fruit with a touch of cassis, sandalwood and hints of Madagascar vanilla stick. On the palate it is dry, medium-full to full bodied, very slightly spicy, intense, mouthfilling and yet harmonious with lots of black berryish fruit along with ripe Damson plums and bright crancherry-cassis flavours. It has a lingering, still somewhat youthful, faintly floral, violet-tinge, “rusty nail” finish. It has 15.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number LM1804026 on the lower part of the glass bottle. NEW in Vintages. CSPC 16210

TASTING NOTE: My favorite of this estate's three red cuvées was the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Privilege, a barrel aged blend (30% new) that includes 5% or so white grapes and a wide swathe of red varieties. The cedar and vanilla notes are pronounced but not overwhelming, serving to highlight gorgeous cherry fruit. It's full-bodied, plush and unabashedly modern but also luminous and silky, with a long, long finish. Drinking date: 2018-2035. Score - 96 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2018) Price $ 85.95
