ROMITORIO DI SANTEDAME GRAN SELEZIONE CHIANTI CLASSICO 2016 DOCG |

Assessed from a bottle provided by the agent. This did not appear in the October 31 Vintages Catalogue, but is listed on the LCBO website as an October 31 release. This classy single vineyard Gran Selezione has great complexity and structure but it’s also still quite youthful meaning that it isn’t a lot of fun to taste in a small ISO glass. Intense deep purple red colour, the nose shows lots of attractive, youthful, ripe, plummy, red and black cherry fruit with some mulberry-sandalwood notes. Extremely dry, medium-full bodied, still a tad tight, very bright, complex, cedar-sandalwood-tinged, ripe plum-cherry-cassis fruit with a lingering, high acid, grippy, leather-tinged finish. Small quantities are only available in 7 stores, the balance of 238 bottles is at #947 (Whse_Embassy+E-Commerce). This blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino has 14% alcohol on the bottle (vs. 14.5% on the tech sheet) and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number L19078 on the lower part of the glass bottle (bottled on March 19, 2019). Thankfully I used my CORAVIN to extract a taste this keeper - it will be much better when I return to taste it again next year. |

Tasting Note: The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Romitorio di Santedame is a full-bodied Sangiovese from the region, blended along with 10% Colorino, that presents rich and nicely concentrated fruit. The bouquet is neatly folded together with tight offerings of black cherry, red blackberry, leather and crème de cassis. Dusty notes of earth or baked brick appear on the close. There's even a sharper note of pencil shaving. Ruffino suggests pairing this with tandoori chicken, which sounds like a great idea. Drink date: 2019-2030. Score - 93.
