RESERVE PINOT NOIR 2017 VQA Prince Edward County
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note Producer HUFF
Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. Prince Edward County Pinot Noir is definitely a challenge given the short growing season and freezing winters. This somewhat idiosyncratic 2017 has lots of interesting things happening. Medium deep bright red colour, the nose has various appealing elements - ripe persimmon, red and black cherries and mineral-tinged, ripe Damson plums. Dry, medium to medium-light bodied albeit quite well structured, gently complex, fairly intense, very slightly spicy, very fresh, ripe, plummy-crancherry flavours with some rose-hip notes and a lingering, very gently cedary, high acid, lifted, grippy, somewhat earthy finish. Perhaps a tad austere for some, I liked it! Has 12% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar. The recommended 2014 (***) was released on February 18, 2017 at $35.00. CSPC 489708

TASTING NOTE: The nose on this Prince Edward County pinot is wonderfully expressive, with all manner of sour cherry, plum, floral, graphite and smoky notes coming through. It's light-plus bodied, delicate and fresh, with ripe cherry and plum notes as well as licorice, herbal and white pepper components, modest wood and tannins and a medium finish.
