SIDEWOOD SHIRAZ 2017 Sustainable, Adelaide Hills, South Australia |
Vintage Assessments Tasting Note |

Ashwood Estate |
Unable to get a bottle for assessment from the agent. It did so well last time, I simply couldn’t resist buying a bottle at the LCBO. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed by this flavour bomb! Deep intense purple colour. Very attractive, complex, gently cedary, somewhat smoky, ripe, plum-cherry-cassis nose. Dry, medium-full bodied, well structured, slightly spicy, very bright, tangy, intense, ripe, plum-black-cherry-cassis flavours with a lingering, gently cedary, very faintly herbal, gently smoky, complex finish that has some meaty, mocha-chocolate notes. This remarkable 100% Shiraz was fermented with wild yeast in French oak followed by 18 months of aging (not 13 months as stated in the Vintages Catalogue) before bottling. It has 14% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number 9087 on the lower part of the glass bottle. Screwcap closure. The recommended best buy 2016 (***) with 90-points was released on November 9, 2019 at $19.95. |

TASTING NOTE: Five clones, mainly Selectiv'-harvested, a small portion hand-picked and vineyard-sorted for the small amount of whole bunches, numerous batch variations, matured in French oak (25% new) for 13 months. Seriously satisfying, every aspect explored and finessed, ripe black fruits the core. Drink by: 2045. Special Value. Score - 97 (winecompanion.com.au, Aug. 1, 2019) |
